Looking across the sloper with LPT in the background Photos: Big G

.

.

Wandering in, or out of LPT, have you ever let your gaze drift up from the boulder field across which you are skipping? Big G took the risk of tripping up and face planting the floor, and his reward was nothing short of astounding: the biggest limestone sloper in Wales!

“Well of all the places!

Not even half way over to the steep punishments of the lower Pen Trywyn sports arena (where so many of us have hung about like failed orang-u-tangs), and what might one come across but a perfect specimen.

Yes, it has to be admitted - the thing is a bit odd, emerging as it does from a wall of hanging choss. But unlike its neighbours it is so positioned in both elevation and angle as to provide the most stirring possibilities, the chief attraction being a line of slopers rougher than a cafe pasty.

Mats will be needed, (say a dozen) to counter the undulations below, but short of this it is the perfect set-up so long as none of the elegantly poised material above decides to erode during your visit.

As with the cliff to the right it is not unknown for motorists or walkers to discard items from the road, the tumbling detritus picking up alarming speed by the time it has descended to beach level. However, the strange object of our attentions is tucked away quite nicely beneath the aforementioned fragile brown cliff of glued stones, forming with luck, a sort of dubious protective shield.

And the setting...well, early morning is best with the sun’s transforming properties and the first feint music drifting across from the pier. Herring gulls will swirl like the spirits of tourists past with their complaining calls, excreta dropping from them in grim free-fall dollops. The tame green ripple-flat sea keeping its secrets well, sometimes creeping low to reveal kelp weeds, their hold-fast stems like so many deformed visitors contemplating an advance across the pock-marked beach rocks.

Every life-form both real and imagined will be there to egg you on... across those virgin slopers.

Keep the focus brothers and sisters, and don't look back!

Big G”
