The granite wonder! Photos: Big G

This month Big G takes us off the beaten track again to find yet more bouldering delights hidden in the hills of Eryri.

Dear NWB readers,

I bring you another gem from Snowdonia’s wild western cwms.

As I wrestle through the deepening woodland undergrowth, all of a sudden there's a burst of sunlight ripping below the canopy. It illuminates the translucent young bracken stalks, the orchids, the bog blossoms - and beyond them - pure clean Granite!

Tree branches grow close to the long line of slopers, suggesting lamentable neglect. It seems this mighty quartz decorated boulder has been overlooked in the everyday hustle and bustle of life on the banks of the Afon-Tal-y-Mignedd (gr 537532).

It can be approached by an unlikely little path which surmounts the ridge south of Drws-y-coed. Great care must be taken en-route so that one does not plummet down any of the alarming mine shafts hereabouts.

Open woodland and a south facing aspect allow good drying conditions and fine views of Mynydd Tal-y-Mignedd, and of course, the lost souls on the Nantlle Ridge.

More gems probably lurk amidst these trees and further sport is certainly guaranteed on the sprawl of short slabs back by the road.

Best regards and happy hunting,

Big G
