Occasionally one must feature a really first class boulder in the BotM series, for fear of losing all credibility. This month Big G delivers the goods, and the goods are…good!

Dear fellow boulder seekers,

If you dare to seek adventure in the mountains then Craig Cwm Dulyn has to be high on the list. Is it the rugged topography? The glorious isolation? Or the breathtaking views across the stretched out headlands of southern Môn?

Or indeed the effortless 1km walk across mostly flat terrain.

Leaving the A487 the last daffodils bow to your passing ascent of the winding roads that lead up to Nebo's collection of homesteads, gently sinking into the grass below the huge mast. As you bustle along the unworn path toward GR 493 492 you will find yourself sharing the place with nothing more than a couple of Canada geese. As the obvious objective is reached the mast sneaks out of view leaving one in a delightful setting.

The block's vertical north face provides a combination of slopers and pockets above a perfect landing. Its south face is a joy of sloping edges and the bulging west face will provide something for the bold.

Among the rocks a series of small tunnels can be found, evidence that we can become preoccupied digging for treasure, when we already have it staring us in the face.

Pumped - I stand admiring the open moorland, waiting for the first cuckoo.

Perhaps it's me.

Big G

(NB. regarding the ‘Abandoned Dumper Truck Bird Bath’ art installation: the artist’s identity is unknown, but presumably it is the same genius who made the popular ‘Marchlyn Stack of Skips’ sculpture? – see previous BotM features for more on this.)
