Zed on the first ascent of Undercover Apples (7C), video screenshot: Oliver-Jones collection

Zed Oliver-Jones struck again last week, this time picking off an impressive, high line on the Homage boulder at Clogwyn y Bustach, Nant Gwynant.

Undercover Apples (7C) starts sitting left of Tawg and heads straight up the bulging wal to finish out left on the obvious weakness. It goes at 7B+ from a standing start. (See page 450 in the NWB 3.1 guide).

”I went to try Sick Happy and had no intention to stop at the Homage boulder but my friend wanted to try White Fang. Whilst there, I was looking up the face, surprised no lines had been established. I saw a few potentials but the one that stood out to me was soon to be Undercover Apples. The movement I was envisioning was really cool but I couldn't see myself actually topping this boulder out, it was just too high. I couldn't resist trying the lower moves though. After a few pull ons I could see it was possible. Now I had a taste for it, I had to come back.” Explained Zed, before adding:

“The next session, I brought Osian [Parry] along, I knew his boldness would give me some Dutch courage to send the boulder and knew he could too. After setting up a somewhat dodgey abseil and cleaning the upper section, I managed to send it and then shortly after, Osian sent the stand start. We were both so psyched to climb such a quality problem, I couldn't believe this gem hadn't been climbed in such plain sight.”
