Adam Hocking has climbed a hard left hand finish to Jerry’s Problem on the main block at the Sheep Pen Boulders in the Ogwen Valley. Jerry’s Left Hand V11/8a starts as for the original, essentially doing all the hard climbing, before swerving leftwards from the gaston hold to gain a small pocket and jumping for the boulder top.
The correct grade for Jerry’s Problem itself has always been contentious. It was originally graded V9/7c by Jerry Moffatt who first climbed it back in the late 90s during a guided tour with Leo Houlding. (Interestingly, on the same day Jerry failed to repeat Leo’s stand up version of Wavelength V8/7b+.)
Several notable climbers have failed on Jerry’s Problem and some feel that it is worth V11/8a. There are of course those who disagree, for example, Adam commented that he thought V10/7c+ was correct, relative at least to other North Wales V10/7c+s such as Lotus on the Wavelength hillside.
